Wen Special...or not
Wen's special custom gun

This is Wen's gun dubbed by Colby Anger as the 'FN71 Wen's Special' which according to his theory is a hybrid of an FN Five-Seven and FN Forty Nine pistol.
Other visitors have variously commented on what the odd bulge on the pistol's slide which some suspect to be a top-mounted LAM/red-dot sight and a recoil suppression system.

Corey Goodermote meanwhile had this to say on the subject:

'In episode six (Almost positive it's right, the one with the child), most people have not been able to identify the Devil child's weapon. I believe for it to be a custom Desert Eagle/Jericho 941F that is semi-auto. and fires 5.56 ammo (Based on the size of the holes that the bullets produce). The barrel is slightly triangular, similar to that of the Desert Eagle. Also, the barrel is extremely long, and the grip is of on a acute angle, similar to that of the Jericho. The odd 'box' that rests on top of the weapon is presumably an upgraded box, to hold the more powerful 5.56 ammo. I believe the weapon is gas-operated, since the barrel does not seem to move, only the 'box'. Hope this would help you improve your website, since I have seen no one with this 'Devil Gun'. Also feel free to use this, if you do add the 'Devil Gun' to your page.'

I also received this comment from Mr Will Szwagiel which seems to confirm the 'recoil suppression' theory:

'While it doesn't help say what kind of gun Wen's is exactly, it does explain what the odd looking contraptions attached to it are. According to the official anime guides for Cowboy Bebop, Wen's gun consists of a counterweight and muzzle break to reduce the recoil when fired.  Again, that doesn't really help in telling what gun it is, but I thought you just might be interested.'

I guess the only way to really resolve this issue is if anyone has the series guides to the show and find the actual comment on the actual wording of this contraption. Or better still as Mr Kimitoshi Yamane, the mechanical designer of the series. So if anyone happens to stumble upon Mr Yamane at any of the anime conventions, be sure to ask him about this so we can finally settle the issue! Until then, the mystery continues...

this cap proves that the 'contraption' on Wen's gun is a recoil suppression cum compensator device. Despite its bulk, Wen still handles the weapon easily.
