Regarding the .40 S&W vs 9mm Parabellum calibre debate:
Brian Spillane did a lot of homework on Spike Jericho and this was what he came out with:
"The real reason I'm writing is to just let you know that the Jericho is chambered in 9mm, 40 S&W, and 45 auto(semi compact) nowa days, and though I'm buying a Baby Eagle (same gun, but jericho's don't get imported anymore) I'm getting it in 40 S&W. I figured out that spike must use the 40 S&W version. First of all, the most rounds he's fired prior to clip change are 11 maybe 12. This could mean that he either uses a 9mm with a post-ban 10 round clip and keeps another round chambered(unlikely) or that he uses a pre-ban 40 S&W. Second, I've carefully measured the width of the gun and the width of the barrel opening of Spikes gun from about 10 scenes in the show where he points it at the screen, and using the known width of the gun (1 1/8 inch) extrapolated an average barrel width of .401". I know its not vital info but I think it should be noted that Spike does in fact use a late model Jericho, chambered in 40 S&W."
This is the first time I've received such detailed explanations for Spike's Jericho to be chambered for .40 S&W! Ok, you've made you're point Brian, but let me remind you that it is the year 2040 and .40 S&W isn't commercially available outside of the US now, so far as I know. Then again, who's to say that 9mm Parabellum will be available is 2040 as well eh? But I admit you're reasoning does make sense. See there are other more rabid Bebop fan's out there! ^_^
Ian D. Lindley has something to rebutt Brian Spillane's assertion on a .40 S&W 941:
Was just reading your bebop pages re: Spike's Jericho 941, and your clever-clogs reader's perfectly sensible and seemingly correct extrapolation concluding that Spike uses the .40 S&W 941.
Slight complication - the insert to the bebop CD box set (with all the music, etc.) is illustrated with a right and a left side view of the Jericho. The breech is stamped "9x19", indicating that it's the 9mm version. Attached is super-grainy shot from crappy clie built-in camera, but you'll see what I mean. Yet another inconsistency, I guess.
Both the P89 and the "Baby Eagle"/Jericho are great guns...some Japanese designer obviously studied long and hard before picking those for Spike. Strange, because licensing to own pistols in Japan apparently involves extremely tough handling and marksmanship exams - the government doesn't want people owning them because they're concealable and easily portable.
Justin Brown suggests how Spike may have gotten his Jericho from:
In Session 26, during one of the flashback scenes, it shows Spike and Vicious back-to-back firing. Spike is using dual Browning HP's, but Vicious has a different weapon, and not his trademark kitana.
The weapon in Vicious' hands is VERY hard to ID, but it could be the Jericho, the same weapon Spike uses. The barrel is short, like the 941, and the end of the barrel does seem to slope backward at the bottom (it's hard to tell in the pic, but the DVD shows it more clearly). Other details are dificult to extract. It doesn't really have a bearing on the type of weapon, it's just a cool little thing, that Vicious could've, at some point, given Spike his pistol.
