Brothers in arms...to the end
Annie hands Spike a Beretta Model 92; If you pause the DVD and take a closer look you can make out the words PIETRO BERETTA and the Beretta logo.

Beretta Model 92

Caliber: 9 x 19 mm

Capacity: 15 + 1 in chamber

This is the weapon that Annie gave to Spike before his famous duel with Vicious in session 5. The Beretta utilized the same locking mechanism as the Walther P38 (the famous German WW2 pistol seen in many western movies) and can be chambered for 9mm Parabellum and .40 S&W among others.
it is also known as the M9 by the US armed forces since replacing the venerable M1911A1 in 1992. why the US military chose to go with the M92 is not the subject here (my guess would be to standardize with the other NATO allies who utilized the 9mm Parabellum long before) but it has since performed well enough in their hands.

Joshua Lutz is convinced this is the 2nd gun that Spike used in the cathedral:

"As a typical hardcore fan, I ran the staircase shootout scene in slow motion to see if there were any clues as to the pistol's make. First, as Spike is running up the stairs, there is a point at which one may make out the sharply angled trigger guard, and the safety mechanism on the back of the slide.

But the view is quick and dirty, and these traits are not unique to the Beretta 92.  However, the clincher is found after the shootout as Spike falls back against the wall, recovers, then moves up the stairs: as his left hand drops from his abdomen down to his side, one can clearly see the distictive exposed barrel, and then the slide that tapers down sharply at 3/4 of an inch from the front.

These two traits mark a Beretta pistol, a snazzy look they've had since the 1934 model (possibly before).  I'd imagine other companies have made look-a-likes, but this one would have to be the 92 model that Annie gave to him earlier in the episode...unless he just said, "I hate Italian," chucked it in the river, and went out and bought a cheaper Bulgarian/Spanish/whatever knock-off (what's cheaper than free?).

Seriously, though, I vote for the Beretta 92."

Mr Lutz' comments does appear quite solid. In fact many of those of emailed me have a lot of solid evidence to back their claims of their respective favourites. But judging from the shot above it might appear that Spike carried THREE guns, not two. Of course, he could just be going through the regular weekly gun-cleaning session, but I doubt it. Also bear in mind that Spike may have used the 3rd gun, which the animators neglected to show us, perhaps due to time constraints, and chucked it after running dry on it.

Sometimes makes me wonder why doesn't he just use a darn shotgun or SMG rather than carry a brace of handguns? Either Spike's super-confident in his marksmanship or he just doesn't have access to one.

I'm writing on regards to the cathedral debate (Ballad of Fallen Angels). Spike uses the Jericho to drop the first henchman holding Faye, then throughout his firefight from behind the pillars. Whilst charging up the stairs, one weapon for sure is the Beretta 92 Annie gave him (I think in his left hand). I'm fairly certain the other is his Jericho. I don't think he ever uses the P85 or a Browning HP in BOFA. The barrel of the other weapon his uses on the staircase looks too compact for the P85. He loads the P85 on the Bebop, but never draws it in the firefight. He then pops the last henchman and duels with Vicious with the Jericho.
